The cultural calendar of Sitges lists important events such as the National Vintage Car Rally, the International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia and the celebration of Corpus Christi. The latter is a religious festival organised every year in June. It is a must-visit event; during the festival, they cover the streets with a wonderful carpet of flowers. The Sitges Carnival is the loudest and most glamourous event taking place on the shores; it is mostly famous for the customers. The national film festival takes place in October or November and lasts 10 days every year. Although the festival used to be dedicated to the genre of horror and fantasy, today it is much more versatile. There are films of several other genres as well as prestigious actors, actresses and directors.
Nightlife in Sitges
The town is very famous for the buzzing nightlife. In the centre, you can choose from several great cocktail bars and clubs. The Carrer del Pecat also called the “Street of Sin”, has smaller clubs like the Titos or the Pacha. In terms of clubs, another popular street is the Carrer Santa Bonaventura. Gastronomy of Sitges
The traditional restaurants of the resort can be found on the beach and in the old city. We should definitely try the Frutti di mare in places like the La Nansa and the El Trull. They serve very good-quality, fresh fish. The so-called xató is a unique dish made with endivia, codfish, tuna, anchovy and olives, and served with Romesco Sauce. The ingredients of the latter are roasted chilli pepper, roasted almond, garlic and olive oil.
The famous Bacardi rum
Bacardi is one of the most popular rum brands worldwide. Even though people often associate Cuba with this beverage, interestingly, its historical roots in Sitges, in Spain. This is where its founder, Facundo Bacardi Massó was born in 1814. Later, emigrating from Spain, he went to the port town of Santiago de Cuba with his siblings. This is where he started experimenting with great care, and after establishing a factory, Facundo created the world-famous Bacardi rum.
There is a Bacardi museum in town, the Casa Bacardi, where we can learn more about the heritage and the manufacturing process. It takes around 45 minutes to take the tour, and we can even prepare our own cocktail at the end. As there are usually many visitors here, it is recommended to buy tickets in advance.
